No better way than to celebrate with pastries that have chocking hazards included in them, not as a fault, but as a feature.

Atencion: Riesgo de asfixia deliciosa. Mantenga afuera del alcance de los ninos. Ellos comen lo todo. Hijos de putas.

Now that would be a full, proper disclosure.

You’re so lucky to have Mexican food readily available to you everywhere. It’s a culinary wasteland up here...

You have no idea. Mexico City has all the best restaurants I´ve been to. Sure, they don´t have Michelin stars, but I gather that we have a ridiculous amount of culinary potential and prowess here, both local and foreign food!

Its not an appropriate GIF.

You see, Paz was a great writer, and a funny one at it on my point of view... but he wasn’t sensible at all to the people he made such commentary (some would say insults) to!

Para alguien que leyó las obras de Paz pareces no captar la ironía fácilmente.

Oh, yo no entiendo bien la ironía... ni el sarcasmo.

Me tomo todo muy en serio. (imagínate una cara seria)

My favorite place in San Diego is a little mom and pop that specializes in Mexico City cuisine (the owners are from there), which mostly meant regional specialties from around the country. They eventually started offering some taco shop fare due to walk ins that had no clue it wasn’t a taco shop (taco shops are ubiquitous in San Diego, a cornerstone of the local food scene). My favorites were Cochanita Pibil and Entomatado, but they had a wide variety of tasty dishes. One of their specialties was a “huarache”, which (for the gringos) is an enormous elongated sope.

Now up in the Seattle area, I can’t find a decent carnicería, let alone a panadería. I miss so many things I used to eat when I lived in SoCal.

Oh yes: Mí español es muy mal. Mí tía intento, but she was too far away.

I honestly don’t understand why its so hard to get Mexican food in the US

It isn’t hard if you want something drenched in cheese and served on a hot plate. I call that stuff “hot plate Mexican”, because the server will always tell you to be careful of the hot plate. In the tourist parts of Mexico they even have restaurants that make this style just for the tourists. It is so weird to me when I’ve gone with my in-laws and they think these places are authentic. On those trips I usually set aside a meal a day to head somewhere where nobody knows English and get something tasty (I really need to work on my Español) that I can’t get anywhere in the US.

Luckily, I now live close to a very decent good taco shop, but I haven’t found either of the above nor any of the many other dishes I’ve tried there, anywhere in the metro area up here. Worse, my wife is so white bread that she won’t even entertain trying my rendition of pollo asado, which I usually make into tacos.

Drenched in cheese?.... fair enough...

A great place to go and have quite local and correctly made Mexican food is San Miguel de Allende. Its a very interesting place because, unlike many other pueblos , this one has large foreigner population. Since appearance is king and we don´t want to scare y’all into spending your money elsewhere the police in San Miguel is quite good, San Miguel is like... Canada safe levels.

Because it is a safe hole in the wall, a lot of people like it there, so if you go there you´ll find really good restaurants, both local and foreign food, a shit ton of designer studios, art galleries and home designers, great coffee shops and artisan workshops. Plus, you´re relatively close to Leon, where you can get basically any shoe you like, hand made!

I wish I could shower you with Mexican-food-know-how but my stomach isn´t quite resistant to some of the local food, so I tend to focus on the Mexican food that isn´t very fat laden or spicy... and we have some! Its just that our international reputation goes for that kind of food and many restaurants that want to seem Mexican culture-ish focus on it too. There´s a really good restaurant here in Coyoacan called Los Danzantes where you can get some alternative plates (and ridiculously good Mezcal), it´s quite famous (perhaps I´m not the first to tell you about it!) and also, any restaurant in Jardin centenario, Parque Lincoln, or Parque Mexico here in Mexico City is probably worth a look at!

by the way, with enough time, even the whitest of bread people find a liking for Mexican food. Half of my family lives in northwest Spain and it took us, the Mexicans, three summers to get them hooked on Quesadillas. Shamefully we could only bring the flour based tortillas on the plane.

Pro tip: If you can mix Mexican ingredients with Galician ingredients you get a heck of a quesadilla right there!
